It might be possible to reverse a person’s biological age - Tech Explorist

Biological age is the objective assessment of an individual’s health status. Hypothetically, a ‘normal’ person’s biological age- – as far as appearance, performance, and functional capacity- ought to be equivalent to his chronological age. Until now, many scientists have endeavored to create systems to precisely determine people’s biological age.

In a recent study in California, scientists found that there is a possibility to reverse the process of ageing.

The results were really surprising, however scientists suggests that the findings are preliminary because the trial was small and did not include a control arm.

The study involved nine healthy volunteers, who were given a cocktail of three common drugs for a year- growth hormone and two diabetes medications. When scientists analysed marks on a person’s genomes, they found that the volunteers aged backwards- losing an average of 2.5 years from their biological ages.

The marks on their genomes represent their epigenetic clock, as well as their immune systems, actually improved despite the passing of time. Moreover, the volenteers’ immune systems also showed signs of rejuvenation.

Geneticist Steve Horvath at the University of California, Los Angeles, who conducted the epigenetic analysis said, “I’d expected to see slowing down of the clock, but not a reversal. That felt kind of futuristic.”

Cell biologist Wolfgang Wagner at the University of Aachen in Germany said, “It may be that there is an effect. But the results are not rock solid because the study is very small and not well controlled.”

The epigenetic clock is estimated by the body’s epigenome – a record of chemical changes to an organism’s DNA. As people age, chemical adjustments or labels are added to people’s DNA, and those change for the duration of their lives, so by taking a gander at those tags an individual’s natural age can be estimated.

Through this study, scientists actually wanted to observe how the growth hormone would change the tissue in the thymus gland, which is is crucial for efficient immune function. Various studies have shown that growth hormone stimulates regeneration of the thymus. But, this harmone can also lead to diabetes. Thus, the study included two widely used anti-diabetic drugs, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and metformin, in the treatment cocktail.

Scientists looked at four different measures of the epigenetic clock to understand the differing ages of each of the patients. They found that each volunteer had reversed significantly.

Horvath said, “This told me that the biological effect of the treatment was robust. What’s more, the effect persisted in the six participants who provided a final blood sample six months after stopping the trial.”

“Because we could follow the changes within each individual, and because the effect was so very strong in each of them, I am optimistic.”

Scientists now hope to test the same effects with more people, through a controlled study, and with different age groups, ethnicities and with women.

Spaceport survey finds little damage from Hurricane Dorian - Spaceflight Now

Launch facilities at Cape Canaveral were spared any significant damage as Hurricane Dorian churned northward off Florida’s east coast earlier this week, and employees at the spaceport resumed their normal work Friday.

No spaceflight hardware was damaged in the storm, which brought high winds and heavy rain to Florida’s Space Coast overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, according to NASA.

“Officials determined the center received some isolated damage and limited water intrusion, along with some beach erosion, although the storm surge was less than expected,” NASA said in a statement.

Programs with work centered at the spaceport lost about a week of schedule time due to the hurricane, according to Patricia Sanders, chair of NASA’s Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel.

Hurricane Dorian interrupted testing of the mobile launch tower for NASA’s Space Launch System heavy-lift rocket at pad 39B. Using an Apollo-era diesel-powered crawler-transporter, teams rolled the 380-foot-tall (115-meter) structure from pad 39B back inside the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy on Aug. 30 for safekeeping during the storm.

The hurricane stalled over Grand Bahama Island, then turned northwest to track parallel to Florida’s east coast. The turn spared the Space Coast a direct hit from Hurricane Dorian.

The center of Hurricane Dorian passed about 80 miles from Cape Canaveral.

According to a Kennedy Space Center spokesperson, the storm brought peak winds of 71 mph at the 50-foot level of the ocean-side launch pads in the Complex 39 area, and 61 mph at the Shuttle Landing Facility northwest of the Vehicle Assembly Building.

Ground crews will roll the SLS Mobile Launcher back to pad 39B Tuesday to resume testing, a NASA spokesperson said Friday.

The Mobile Launcher arrived at pad 39B on June 28 for a round of final tests before officials declare it ready for stacking of the first Space Launch System rocket, the vehicle NASA says will carry astronauts to the moon, perhaps as soon as 2024. NASA said the testing was about 80 percent complete before teams configured the Mobile Launcher to return to the VAB due to Hurricane Dorian.

During the Mobile Launcher’s ground verification campaign, which was previously expected to conclude by the end of September, engineers planned to run a series of tests, including swing arm retractions to mimic their function during a launch countdown, and pumping cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants through the structure’s plumbing for the first time.

In recent weeks, teams conducted water flow tests on the Mobile Launcher at pad 39B to check the performance of the sound suppression and ignition overpressure systems, which reduce the heat and acoustic energy generated as the SLS main engines and solid rocket boosters fire up at liftoff.

The launch tower’s verification tests at pad 39B were about 80 percent complete before teams stood down ahead of Hurricane Dorian, NASA said.

Other programs affected during the closure of the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station this week included Boeing’s Starliner commercial crew capsule, which is built inside a former space shuttle processing hangar near the VAB.

Two Orion spacecraft, which will launch atop the SLS, are also being tested inside Kennedy’s Operations and Checkout Building. The Orion capsules are designed to ferry astronauts to the moon.

United Launch Alliance and SpaceX rocket boosters are also at Cape Canaveral being prepared for future missions. There were no reports of damage to either company’s launch facilities or flight hardware.

Air Force officials are also assessing damage to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Patrick Air Force Base, home to the 45th Space Wing.

“Initial reports show no damage that will affect mission operations, but we have had window, door, roof, power and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) damage which will require repairs,” a base spokesperson said. “Our beaches have also incurred erosion that will need to be remediated.”

The 45th Space Wing is also supporting the Defense Department’s hurricane relief operations in the Bahamas.

Meanwhile, SpaceX is building a prototype for the company’s Starship vehicle a few miles southwest of Kennedy Space Center in Cocoa, Florida. The Starship prototype, which could begin test flights from pad 39A in the coming months, appeared to survive Hurricane Dorian unscathed.

The first ever black hole image lands scientists $3 million prize - Engadget

The scientists that captured the first image of a black hole are being rewarded with a $3 million prize. The Breakthrough prize, known as the "Oscars of Science," is sponsored by Silicon Valley execs such as Mark Zuckerberg and Sergey Brin, and recognizes top scientists in fields including life sciences, physics and math.

The prize will be split between the 347 scientists that worked on the ground-breaking project, which produced the very first image of a black hole. The data behind the image -- which could confirm or at least pose significant questions about our understanding of the universe -- was equivalent to the number of selfies 40,000 people could take in their lifetimes.

According to project director Shep Doeleman, the breakthrough image only marks the beginning of a black hole's media moments. Speaking to AFP, Doeleman said, "What I predict is that by the end of the next decade we will be making high quality real-time movies of black holes that reveal not just how they look, but how they act on the cosmic stage." Indeed, the team is already working on the processing the data needed to produce the first -- likely rudimentary -- video of a black hole, which could be revealed next year.

How to watch the Indian moon landing - CNN

Chandrayaan-2, which translates as "moon vehicle" in Sanskrit, took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota on July 22, a week after its first launch was called off due to a "technical snag".
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reported that its orbiter and landing module successfully separated on Monday -- six weeks into the mission.
It expects the lander and rover to touch down early Saturday local time. If successful, it will be the first time a spacecraft has landed on the moon's south polar region.
Once there, a rover will detach from the lander and start to map the south region, collecting mineral and chemical samples for remote scientific analysis.

ISRO will broadcast updates on its website (isro.gov.in) from its headquarters in Bengaluru, where Indian President Narendra Modi will be watching. It will also appear on India's Press Information Bureau YouTube channel.

Space agency satellite forced to dodge SpaceX ‘mega constellation’ orbiting Earth - Express.co.uk

A European Space Agency’s satellite was on a collision course with the Elon Musk-owned SpaceX Starlink constellation. SpaceX Starlink consists of a vast number of internet satellites launched into space by Elon Musk this year. Without the manoeuvre, the satellites could have collided high above Earth, ESA warned.

However, such moves might not be possible in the future, it has been revealed.

As more such constellations arrive in space, the danger will be significantly increased and will not be able to solve by manoeuvring out of the way.

The last-minute manoeuvre occurred after space detritus experts discovered there was a high risk of collision between the two active satellites.

ESA discovered it would be safer for the Aeolus ESA satellite to increase its altitude, allowing it to fly over the dangerous constellation.

Aeolus then fired its thrusters about half an orbit away from the potential collision.

Soon after they had been calculated to potentially crash, the satellite beamed back data to reassure engineers the collision had been avoided.

The European Space Agency believes such manoeuvres are currently very rare between active satellites.

Satellites have only previously had to move out of the path of old satellites or fragments from previous collisions.

But space agencies including ESA have repeatedly warned that mega-constellations such as those sent into space by SpaceX Starlink will pose a drastically increased danger.

Those constellations are purported by SpaceX to feature thousands of satellites.

When there is such a high degree of danger, it will become nearly impossible for engineers to spot potential collisions and move satellites out of danger.

Instead, ESA plans to make this process automatic, relying on artificial intelligence to move satellites out of danger.

According to Holger Krag, head of the Space Debris Office at ESA, the risk of collision between the two satellites was 1 in 1,000 – ten times higher than the threshold that requires a collision-avoidance manoeuvre.

However, despite Aeolus occupying this region of space nine months before Starlink 44, SpaceX declined to move their satellite after the two were alerted to the impact risk by the US military, who monitor space traffic.

Mr Krag told Forbes: “Based on this we informed SpaceX, who replied and said that they do not plan to take action.”

Mr Krag claims SpaceX informed them via email – the first contact that had been made with SpaceX, despite repeated attempts by his team to get in touch since Starlink launched.

He added: “It was at least clear who had to react.

“So we decided to react because the collision was close to 1 in 1,000, which was ten times higher than our threshold.”
